You can run the Personal Web Server with the Personal Web Manager. You can configure, administer, and monitor your PWS, and click the TOUR icon for an animated tour. You must also close your Proxy Server or Firewall for PWS to function properly as an Intranet. You can also leave your PC online, and access it with your IP number and the name of the folder/file from a remote computer. ASP (Active Server Pages) will be supported for database usage.

  1. Click START, point to Programs; Microsoft Personal Web Server (or point to ACCESSORIES, and then click INTERNET TOOLS), and then click the Personal Web Manager.

  2. Click the Web Site icon, and click the animated wizard figure.

  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.

The Personal Web Server

The Personal Web Server has four views.

MAIN
Main is used to START and STOP service, and to monitor traffic.

PUBLISH
Publish allows you to add, change, delete, and change descriptions of files.

WEB SITE
Web Site creates and edits a page, and maintains a guest book and a drop box.

ADVANCED
The advanced view is used to create and modify virtual directories, enable directory browsing, and create a Web site log.

The Personal Web Server In A Small Network

Personal Web Servers meet the requirements of a small scale, peer to peer network, or a corporate intranet. A Personal Web Server has the maximum of 10 connections. The Microsoft Internet Information Server (IIS)  is a full web server. The Personal Web Server is updated frequently at http://www.microsoft.com/iis. IIS supports an unlimited number of users. It offers complete security for your web site, and also includes a FTP service. 

Configure A Host Name

  1. Click the Control panel, double click the NETWORK icon.
  2. Under THE FOLLOWING NETWORK COMPONENTS ARE INSTALLED, select the TCP/IP , your network card line, and then click PROPERTIES.
  3. Select the DNS Configuration tab, and then click ENABLE DNS.
  4. Type your computer name in the HOST box.
  5. Click OK, Click OK.
  6. Restart your computer.

Install The Personal Web Server

  1. Click START; Click RUN.
  2. Type cd-rom:\add-ons\pws\setup.exe in the RUN dialog box.
  3. Follow the instructions on the screen.
  4. Restart your machine.

Your home page is C:\inetpub\wwwroot\default.htm.

Connect To The Home Page (PWS)

Open the Internet Explorer and type http://your_computer name in the address box. The Internet Explorer displays the home page.

EXERCISE 1

Configuring The Host Name

  1. Click the Control Panel; double click the NETWORK icon.
  2. Click the IDENTIFICATION tab.
  3. What is your computer name:
  4. Click the CONFIGURATION tab.
  5. Under The following network components are installed, click TCP/IP->your network card, and then click PROPERTIES.
  6. Type your computer name in the HOST  box, and then click OK.
  7. Click OK. A System Setting Change message box appears prompting you to restart your computer.
  8. Click Yes.

EXERCISE 2

Installing A Personal Web Server

  1. Click START, and then click RUN.
  2. Type C:\Win98\add-ons\pws\setup.exe in the open box. Press enter. The Microsoft Personal web server appears.
  3. Click NEXT. You must select a configuration level.
  4. Click TYPICAL. You must type the location of the Web publishing home directory.
  5. Click NEXT to accept the default location. A status bar appears showing the progress of the installation.
  6. Click FINISH. You are prompted to restart your computer when the installation is completed.
  7. Click Yes. The computer restarts.
  8. LOG ON.

EXERCISE 3    

Configuring the Personal Web Server

  1. Click START, point to Programs, Internet Explorer, and the Personal Web Server, and then click the Personal Web Manager. Or, click START, POINT TO ACCESSORIES, point to Internet Tools, and then point to the Personal Web Server, and then click the Personal Web Manager. Or, click the Personal Web Server Icon on the SYSTEM TRAY, and click PROPERTIES. The Personal Web Manager starts and displays the Tip of the day dialog box.
  2. Click Close. The Personal Web Manager window appears displaying, publishing, monitoring, and statistical information.
  3. Click Web site. The home page wizard appears.
  4. Click >>. A Security Alert message box appears warning that your information may be seen by others.
  5. Select the In the future do not show the warning for this zone check box, and then CLICK yes.
  6. Select a template for your home page, and then CLICK >>. You are prompted  to create a guest book.
  7. Click yes, and then click >>. You are prompted to create a list box.
  8. Click yes, and then click >>. You are prompted to customize your home page.
  9. Click >>. Microsoft Internet Explorer opens and displays a template.
  10. Maximize the Internet Explorer.
  11. Type a title for your home page.
  12. Scroll down and type your name and e-mail name.
  13. Follow the directions on the screen, and type additional information about yourself.
  14. Scroll down and click Enter new changes. Your home page appears with the information you typed.
  15. Close the Internet Explorer. The Personal Web Manager appears.
  16. Click MAIN.
  17. Write down the number of requests and the number of bytes served.
  18. In the Publishing box, click http://hostname. The Internet Explorer opens and displays your home page.
  19. Switch to the Personal Web Manager.
  20. Write down the number of requests and the number of bytes served. Notice that the monitoring and statistics information has changed to reflect the number of visits to your site.
  21. Close all opened windows.
